Over The Course Of A Year, This Italian Nurse Killed 13 Of Her Patients
A nurse is accused of killing at least 13 patients at a state-run Italian hospital by giving them deadly doses of the blood thinner Heparin. Most of those who died at the Piombino facility suffered severe hemorrhaging while undergoing relatively safe procedures. Each of the patients was given 10 times the normal limit of the drug, according to the Guardian.None of the patients were terminal, and one was being treated for a broken femur. The patients who passed away ranged from their 60s to their 80s.
At a hospital in Piombino, a 55-year-old nurse was arrested for murdering at least 13 of her patients.
All of her victims were between the ages of 61 and 88, and it's believed that she killed them by administering lethal doses of blood thinners through IVs.
Police became suspicious of the nurse when they figured out that all of the patients who died were under her care.
When the suspect was transferred out of intensive care, that wing's death rate fell by 8 percent.
Police believe that the suspect, who is now in custody, may suffer from depression, but that is no excuse for the crimes she committed. These killings call to mind another murderous Italian nurse by the name of Daniela Poggiali, who was accused of murdering 38 of her patients (although it is possible that she killed as many as 96 of them). Italian officials need to figure out what's going on here and get it under control.
